Let's Go Everywhere

Medeski Martin & Wood

How to describe this fabulously weird disc? Jazz, hip-hop, fun, funk... funkalicious! These veteran New York musicians have been redefining "fusion" for years; now they turn their talents to their first kids' album, so your kid won't grow up unfulfilled and uncool. 'Nuff said. This disc is cool; the sounds are at once spophisticated, diverse and silly. It's got happy-groovy instrumentals such as "where's the music?" (crank it loud to clean the house) and a hip-hopped-up version of "Pat a Cake," packed with preschool attitude. A sweet spot is the offbeat story-song narrated by Lounge Lizards' front man John Lurie: "The Squalb" will have you rethinking that fuzz you find in your pockets.
